Whole‑School Curriculum Intent

Our curriculum is designed to provide all learners with a broad, balanced and knowledge‑rich education that prepares them for the next stage of learning and life beyond primary school. It is planned to ensure depth of understanding, secure progression and opportunities to develop character, curiosity and confidence.

Based on the National Curriculum, our curriculum aims to ensure all children:

  • Acquire secure knowledge and vocabulary across all subject areas
  • Develop fluency in key skills, including reading, writing and mathematics
  • Build resilience, independence and a positive attitude to learning
  • Experience meaningful challenge, regardless of starting point or background
  • Make connections across subjects to deepen understanding
  • Are well‑prepared for the transition to secondary school.

Our curriculum reflects our school values of unique, grateful, honest, kind, and brave, enabling children to grow academically, socially and personally. We create learners who aspire to achieve their very best, believe in themselves and others, and contribute positively to school and community life.

Curriculum Principles

Our curriculum is structured around four core principles which underpin every subject:

1. Memory

  • Daily retrieval practice supports long‑term retention of key knowledge.
  • Low‑stakes testing reinforces “sticky knowledge.”
  • Children make connections with prior learning, home experiences and the wider world.

2. Sequencing

  • Curriculum maps follow National Curriculum expectations and are coherently ordered.
  • Units build incrementally on prior knowledge and skills.
  • Teachers plan with clear end points for each unit, year group and key stage.

3. Fluency

  • Daily teaching of core skills (phonics, arithmetic, times tables).
  • Repetition and revisiting of key knowledge through structured retrieval.
  • Application of knowledge in varied contexts supports adaptability and mastery.

4. Encouragement

  • Ambitious curriculum expectations for all pupils.
  • Resilience and problem‑solving are modelled and developed.
  • Children are encouraged to ask questions, think deeply and evaluate their own learning.

Curriculum Implementation

Our curriculum is implemented through consistent, research‑informed practice:

  • Long‑term, medium‑term and short‑term planning ensure full National Curriculum coverage.
  • Each subject follows a sequenced progression model from Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) to Year 6.
  • Teaching includes modelling, guided practice and independent application.
  • Retrieval practice is embedded across lessons to support retention.
  • Assessment informs next steps and identifies gaps in knowledge early.
  • Enrichment, educational visits and themed days extend and deepen learning.

Curriculum Impact

We evaluate the impact of our curriculum through:

  • Pupil outcomes in statutory and non‑statutory assessments
  • Monitoring of books, planning and classroom practice
  • Pupil voice to understand engagement, confidence and recall
  • Assessment of long‑term retention through retrieval tasks
  • Tracking of progression from EYFS to Year 6
  • Evaluation of how well pupils are prepared for secondary school.

Our learners demonstrate strong retention of key knowledge, increasing independence, improved fluency and confidence across subjects, and a clear ability to articulate their learning.

Subject Curriculum Statements

Below is a summary of each subject’s Intent, Implementation and Impact, and Medium-Term Plans.

We value Art and Design as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a rich, broad and balanced curriculum. Art and Design provides the children with the opportunities to develop and extend skills and an opportunity to express their individual interests, thoughts and ideas.

Art, craft, and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity and we intend for our learners to believe in their own creative spark and the journey it can take them on. A high quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.

As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Our children can aspire to become the artists, creators and designers of the future.

Knowledge and understanding of computing is of increasing importance for children’s future both at home and for employment and we want our children to aspire to understand the digital world and its potential and pitfalls and to contribute positively with all technologies.

We aim to develop children’s confidence and competence of engaging with a variety of technology to encourage them to belong to a world shaped by technology using skills that will equip them for life. Through computing we seek to engage and enrich children’s experiences in school through digital literacy, ICT and computer science allowing them to become confident digital learners who use computational thinking.

We value Modern Foreign Languages as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a rich, broad and balanced curriculum. Modern Foreign Languages provides our children with the opportunities to develop linguistically, extend skills, and be immersed in other cultures. We believe that our children deserve the skill of language acquisition to fully access our modern world. The intent of the Spanish curriculum at Wisewood Primary School is that children are taught to develop an interest in learning other languages in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating. We encourage children's confidence and we strive to stimulate and children's curiosity about language and other cultures.

Learning a foreign language is a necessary part of being a member of a multicultural society and provides an opening to other cultures. The high-quality language curriculum fosters children’s curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world. From the Early Years Foundation Stage children are taught to develop an appreciation and understanding of cultures and their contributions to the modern world. Languages, traditions and celebrations are covered as part of the Understanding of the World in the Foundation Stage and the wider curriculum in KS1. At Wisewood we aspire for our children to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. The curriculum provides opportunities for pupils to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching provides the foundation for learning further languages, equipping children to study and work in other countries.

It is intended that when children leave Wisewood, they will have a natural curiosity and confidence to explore other countries, cultures and languages. We believe that in a multi-lingual society it is a valuable skill to be able to communicate effectively with others in another language.  Pupils will be engaged and prepared to continue language learning at Secondary School and to make positive contributions to their global community and be a modern-day British Citizen.

At Wisewood Primary School, we believe that through the delivery of a high quality PSHE curriculum we will equip emotionally literate children with the transferable skills needed to contribute to global citizenship. All staff recognise the complex interplay between emotional and cognitive development and that a child’s emotions impact their direct thoughts and consequently their behaviour. With this in mind we deliver PSHE to all pupils from the beginning of Foundation Stage 2 and educate the whole child intellectually, morally socially and spiritually. Our PSHE curriculum provides children with relevant and meaningful content with a strong emphasis of emotional literacy and the nurturing of mental and physical health. With an ever-changing society we aspire to empower all children regardless of their background or previous experiences to believe in their ability to positively contribute to the wider community with a robust understanding of diversity. We embed this understanding through a rich and diverse exposure to texts where children can acknowledge the core British Values and their heritage.

We aspire to empower children and are committed to developing a culture that focuses on instilling a sense of morality to allow children to participate effectively in modern day society.
